So, in addition to the half marathon I did in February, I’m thinking that I’m going to try for the Rock N’Roll half marathon in August and then hopefully (assuming the lottery gods will be good to me - fingers crossed) the NYC marathon in November. That still leaves space for any half-marathons that catch my eye throughout the year - if you know of any going on somewhere cool, feel free to let me know!
I was hoping to be able to do the NYRR Half-Marathon Grand Prix in Brooklyn in May, but they changed the date of it and now it takes place on the same day and time as the Revlon/Run Walk for Women. I try to do either the Run/Walk or Race for the Cure (or sometimes both) every year. I’m not the world’s greatest fundraiser (if I was asking for money to buy new shoes, I’m sure I’d be much more eloquent), but it still makes me feel good to know that I gave something towards cancer research.
Plus, I know myself very well and I tend to lean towards a sort of New Yorker-superwoman nonchalance about my health that these races kick right out of me within 15 seconds. Of the tens of thousands of participants, so many run in honor of someone who died from cancer or (not as common) someone who survived cancer. There are always masses of cancer survivors running or those who have cancer at that moment. It really brings home to me how widespread cancer is and every year, I spend the time just before the race starts struggling not to break down and bawl like a baby.

For future reference, buying a case for your iPod Nano = good. Forgetting to wear pants with pockets and sticking the iPod Nano into your sports bra to hold it steady = bad. VERY bad. Wipe out the display bad. I never realized my breasts were so powerful.
Sigh…off to the Apple Store…

I decided against doing the Rock n Roll marathon in San Diego on June 1…I need a real actual vacation where I don’t have to do anything but lay around and possibly drink rum out of a coconut. Plus trying to figure out the logistics of getting from Los Angeles to San Diego in time to get the race registration and hotel worries and blah blah yakkety smakkety was just too much, not to mention the stress of running 26.2 miles on your “vacation”. So I’m letting that particular race go in favor of real relaxation in California that weekend.
That being said, now I’m a little stuck: I was planning on signing up for this half marathon taking place in Brooklyn on May 3. Imagine my surprise when I found that the Revlon Run/Walk takes place on the exact same day and time (just not in Brooklyn). Doing the half marathon would be about goal management and attempting to shave more time off my pretty sluggish mile. But doing the Run/Walk (and also the Race for the Cure) is about raising money and camaraderie and celebrating (and mourning) all those affected by cancer. I don’t know which one to do…

But I’ve decided to register for the Rock N Roll Marathon in San Diego on June 1. I figured it was kismet, since I was planning to be in Los Angeles on vacation for those days anyway, so I might as well do something productive while I’m there. Which means that it is now time to join my marathon training schedule already in progress…

I’ll admit it - I’ve been slacking off since doing the New Orleans half marathon for which I DID NOT get a medal since they somehow managed to run out (bastards).
Did I mention that I don’t like to run? I did? Well, did I also mention that I don’t like to do laundry and therefore running gets the double whammy with all the extra socks and sports bras and sweat soaked tee shirts I have to wash after running?
Ok, enough whining…I head back to my belovedly hateful uphill, bumpy Eastern Parkway run tonight. As much as I hate running, I hate the laggardly lazy feeling that comes with not running even more.
